57th General Assembly held

picture of the Assembly The 57th General Assembly of the Japan Association of National University Libraries was held at Sapporo on June 18, 2010 hosted by Hokkaido University Library.

After the opening address by Professor Motoo Furuta, President of JANUL, the greeting from Dr. Hiroshi Saeki, President of Hokkaido University and Dr. Masaaki Henmi, Director of Hokkaido University Library. Before the proceedings, Dr. Shun'ich Maruno, Director of Kyushu University Library and Professor Mitsuo Yamamoto, Director of Hokkaido University of Education Library were nominated for the chairperson and the vice-chairperson, respectively.

In the proceeding, firstly the president, vice-president, board libraries and auditors were introduced, and there was the progress report of the Association's activities after the 56th General Assembly last June.

Then the following issues were discussed: the FY2009 financial results; the proposed business plans for FY2010 (such as, new active plans and key issues of the committees, subsidized projects for regional associations); the proposed budget for FY2009; and so on.

Next, Mr. Toru Funahashi, Director of Information Division, Research Promotion Bureau, MEXT explained the activities of the Subdivision on Science, Council for Science and Technology, the library market testing, the status of FY2009 special education and research budgets and the summary of the supplemental budgets; the FY2011 budget request; the 4th Science and Technology Basic Plan, the report of "FY2008 Survey of the Scholarly Infrastructures", and so on.

Further, the awarding ceremony of 2010 JANUL Award was performed. Ryukyu University Library won the award for their activity of the "Biblio Literary Award".

After that, workshops was held and the following two topics were discussed actively; A: business management of the university library in the future; B: new service deployment, library organization and personnel training in the university library.
